Summer Camps

Brenda Beattie and Darla Anderson have joined forces to offer two exciting weeks of Fine Art and Music Summer Camps for children aged five to twelve years old. These Summer Camps take place in a quaint, century old school house in the Blue Mountains and run from 9:30am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday.  Nurture your child’s creativity and enrich their summer experience through a week-long immersion in art and music. Students will come home from Fine Art and Music Summer Camps with new skills, new friends and a deeper appreciation for the arts.

MUSIC: Your child will have fun playing percussion instruments, engaging in eurythmics, and singing.  Based on the Orff approach, imitation, experimentation, and personal expression occur naturally as students become confident, life-long musicians and creative problem solvers.  Children will explore their own creative expression in a non-competitive atmosphere that encourages respect and appreciation for each other.

ART: Your child will learn techniques in painting, drawing and sculpture through two and three dimensional, project-based art adventures.   Students are encouraged to both dive deep into their imagination and foster a greater understanding of visual language to enrich their expression.  Together we will connect to our artistic spirits and embrace the summer weather by painting and drawing outside, all within our culture of friendship.

Week One:  Rain Forest Expedition July 8 - 12

We will learn about the four layers of the rain forest and where more than half of the world’s animals live.  Students will participate in eurythmics to South American music and explore music of the Rain Forest Pygmies.  Through vocal technique and Orff instrumental instruction, students will learn to sing and play songs about the Rain Forest for their performance.

Students will explore how rain sticks were made and used in indigenous cultures and will embark upon creating their own, embellishing it with paintings of animals and insects.  Supporting their understanding of the layers involved in a rain forest, students will create a tropical terrarium in a jar.

Week Two: Celtic Celebration. July 15 - 19

We will explore Celtic culture of the past as well as listen to the music of current-day Celtic artists. Students will move and dance to jigs and reels and learn the meaning behind a Celtic ballad.  Through vocal technique and Orff instrumental instruction, students will learn to sing and play a variety of Celtic songs for their performance.

Participants will learn to sketch and paint fairies and creatures from Celtic myths.  Through drawing exercises, students will fortify their technique. They will learn the meaning of Celtic symbols and use them to adorn their own clay-made jewelry.  In creating a wall hanging, students will make their initials out of Celtic knots.

The children’s musical and artistic talents culminate in a magical outdoor performance and art exhibit on Friday at 3:00 pm.  Please bring family and friends.

Students are required to bring: a water bottle, sunscreen, a snack and lunch, and are encouraged to wear/bring clothes for messy art projects and variable weather.  Fresh fruit is provided everyday at the camp.

Fine Art and Music Summer Camp provides volunteer opportunities for students aged 13 and up. Two paid positions are also available for senior high school or university students.
